When I deliver any treatment to my patients I deliver the treatment that I would want if I were the patient, BUT knowing what I know, if you get that.
Even if the patient doesn’t fully understand all that I am doing or why, they are getting what I would want, knowing what I know, if I were them.
That sounds like the right thing to do, but more so as we talked about in the previous blog, most patients think they know why they are standing in my office, and try to quantify those reasons, but in the end, most are simply asking for help, and for what, most don’t really know.
They suspect something isn’t right, but aren’t quite sure what.
I can assume because I am a chiropractor and they are in my office that their issue must be a musculo-skeletal problem, right?
Why else would they come to my office complaining of low back pain if it wasn’t a musculo-skeletal back problem? It must be, right?
This type of assumption could prove to be a huge mistake!
All too often what most patients notice as the “first” sign of a problem is so far downstream it’s amazing that they were able to walk into my office.
A true testament to the survival drive of the human body and the intelligence that controls it.
Let’s take the typical low back pain.
By the time a person notices stiffness and pain and has spent the ensuing weeks stretching, trying to strengthen their back at the gym, and sleeping on a heating pad, the tissues of the lower back have long since been damaged and degraded by chronic, unresolved inflammation.
In fact, it was this degradative process that allowed for the lower back to be injured in the first place and the sensation of pain.
In fact, if a person could see the level of damage that has occurred, most would find it difficult to believe they would ever heal and recover again.
And unless the chronic inflammatory condition is resolved, the patient’s greatest fears might be true.
In looking at most patients they are deconditioned, overweight, and generally unhealthy, even those who appear to be healthy, and are working very hard at being healthy.
In the case above, for some reason this time, rather than having a heart attack or some other calamity, the person’s lower back decided to blow out instead.
The low back issue, while painful and debilitating, is not the problem, it is the warning shot that is meant to alert the individual that the next time they might not be so lucky.
Think I’m kidding?
The unresolved inflammation and its destructive processes are the same that cause every disease and disorder known to mankind- a list of about 10, 000 or so maladies.
Low back pain? That was one, you now have 9,999 or so to go!
I know, pretty heavy-handed, why can’t it just be a simple low back strain?
Because it’s not, and it never was.
Most recovered well back in the “good old days” because they weren’t so overweight, inflamed, and unhealthy.
Uggghhh…, too bad there isn’t just one thing a person could work on that would keep them from being at risk for almost every disease and disorder on the planet, right?
What if I told you there was?
Impossible!
One thing, is that if a person spent his waking hours handling and sleeping hours resolving what presented the best chance at avoiding almost every health disaster that might affect a person, what would that be?
It’s the blood sugar. Plain and simple.
If a person spent his time managing blood sugar, I dare say he would be doing his best to prevent contracting every disease and disorder known to man.
In fact, I probably wouldn’t waste my time working on anything else.
If the blood sugar isn’t squared, you are wasting your time.
I’ll talk more about this in the next couple of blogs.
In the meantime, if you are interested in handling your blood sugar, please let us know…, we can help!
Take Care,
Dr. Dave
